Mission Hills Play Area
Located on the City Hall grounds, Mission Hills, Kansas.
Installed Spring 2004.
This play area is the first to be installed within the city limits and demanded sensitive siting due to its location adjacent to City Hall, just outside the Mayor's Office. The location also keeps out of view from inside the Council Chambers and intergrates well within the existing overstory trees. Colors were selected to be attracitve to the children but still remain subtle to respect the location.
ADA access is available via walk extensions approaching the play area from both sides of the site, seamlessly matching textures and materials. Play surfacing is completely accessible with the use of poured-in-place cushioning material. The play structure has accessible opportunities on more than half of all elements available to the children.
Landscaping is shade tolerant and serves as a boundary for the young recreators. Views into and across the plant beds are an important criteria for child safety while benches offer rest comforts to parents.
This play area was budgeted at $50,000 while the landscaping had a budget of $20,000; another $10,000 of in-kind service was contributed.
